SandraR2002: does anyone use twitter in the classroom????

Robby: I would like to become more familiar with the newest technologies....I've heard all about twitter....I don't what what it is or how it's different from a chat room.

Jan: my kids text each other in the same room

Walta: I want to learn more tools to use because I already use lots of tools I would like to learn to use twitter

BarbInNebraska: @SandraR2002 it's blocked at my school

Super Jill: I want to use Twitter in the classroom, maybe with the kids' cell phones, but cell phones are a big NO NO in school, right now.

BarbInNebraska: I'd love to show @astro_Mike tweeting from Space to my students

wierd: how?

klmontgomery: http://twitter.com/klmontgomery

rsziegler: Is this site free or subscription based?

dkhill: Corina, we'll find out after the other sites are given. :-)

SandraR2002: i have tried to use edublogs in my english class but our system has a hard time handling it

klmontgomery: klmontgomery on delicious and diigo

Zachary: Almost everything is blocked at our school, even links sent to us by our techies.

BarbInNebraska: @rsziegler you have to have a blog to host it, I beleive

Corina: okay, I hope so

klmontgomery: klmontgomery on flickr

John Peters: @klmontgomery I love the avatar on your Twitter account, I'm following you now

klmontgomery: klmontgomery on VoiceThread

BarbInNebraska: @zachary no way! Do they unblock them?

Walta: I have blogs set up for some students on 21classes.com and wikis for my students on pbworks.com

klmontgomery: Thanks john!

rsziegler: thanks!

Zachary: Yes, but they get mildly upset.

SandraR2002: i don't know what wikis are... what r they?

Super Jill: Hey, Walta...you learned all that in Web 2.0 Boot Camp last summer, didn't you?

paula: Super Jill--have you considered setting them up on wikimail? safe and limited to membersif you set it up that way. I use that with 3rd graders!

juliana: so much is blocked at my school that in the word refrigerator brought up a lot of blocked sites

Walta: I also have diigo and delicious acounts and know about voice thread which is great

Super Jill: @paula...good idea! I'll try that!

paula: I prefer wikipsaces--find it easier and more intuitive thatn PBWiki.

Gari Larkin: they are a web based teacher web site that is inter active between student and teacher

SandraR2002: ur tech director can unblock certain sites, can't they???

John Peters: If anyone wants the YouTube videos of "the book" here is the tiny url http://tinyurl.com/2ejqvc

klmontgomery: Walta - I love PBWORKS!

Wesley: Here is the link to our videos today! http://www.speedofcreativity.org/resources/videos-for-pd/

Zachary: Our tech director can but it is like an act of congress.

klmontgomery: My wiki is http://thinkingmachine.pbworks.com

juliana: they do not want to do that apparently but oddly some unblocked sites bring up stuff you would not believe so it is sort of pointless

BarbInNebraska: I love this video!!!!

paula: wikis are simply a web site that can have multiple members collaborate and create ONE of mine is at http://crozetmath0809.wikispaces.com/iPodPilot .

Super Jill: Thanks for the info, paula!

BarbInNebraska: Here is my class's wiki.

BarbInNebraska: http://smmroom113.wikispaces.com/

Walta: my wikis are multiple my gifted wiki is kits.pbworks.com

John Peters: Barb I love that you use wikispaces for your classess, I do as well

Don from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 6 hours ago

BarbInNebraska: @John I've only had it since February and I'm hooked! Can't wait to start next year's class right away with it.

Super Jill: Carla...where are you teaching?

paula: here's a cute one from 5th grade kids--done the last day of school last year. .. http://crozet5thgrade.wikispaces.com/wikiworld%21

klmontgomery: We've all met or had teachers with one or more of these attitudes.

BarbInNebraska: Delicious! Love it!

dkhill: His comment about his boss and the laptop is so true.

juliana: a lot of people are afraid to be different--they might get fired

paula: do people find delicious or diigo easier?

suzy from x.x.x.199 joined the chat 6 hours ago

danna: love the video

paula: Here's another good one to start PD with: Joe's non-netbook http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4232212558646621307

klmontgomery: delicious and Diigo are neck & neck! Take the poll - Which social bookmarking site do you prefer to use? http://poll.fm/ycmz

Walta: I made wikis for English, Math, Social Studies http://dmsenglish.pbworks.com; http://dmsmath.pbworks.com; dmsss.pbworks.com

Zachary: Yea!!!! Walta

Susan from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 6 hours ago

dkhill: Skype, YouTube, etc. Those that have the power won't listen to unblocking.

BarbInNebraska: @dkhill there are ways to get around the block on YouTube! I'm sure Wes will show you how today. :-)

BoSox Fan: A lot of people can't get out of their comfort zone to be different. Many have lost imagination over the years.

paula: Walta, Where'd you get the 1000 piece puzzle you used last year?

BarbInNebraska: @BoSox Fan I Used to be nervous about being different but technology is SO much fun and I just can't stop using it. So many cool ways to make my normal project digital.

paula: We have skype unblocked.

Zachary: The same administrators that lack imagination gripe over having teachers with little imagination.

Jeff: you can also use teachertube

paula: and you tube, too. . the only one that is blocked is Facebook--but that's because our Sup't uses social networking tools.

BoSox Fan: Barbinnebraska I was lucky to have started teaching at a school that had some exceptional teachers that thought outside the box and I wanted to be like that.

Walta: at my school I could not get delicious at first, but I could get diigo

Jeff: @dkhill - you might approach them to setting up the faculty block settings different than the students

Corina: dkhill, I can understand that...sorta. If teachers aren't paying attention to what students are doing it could get bad

danna from x.x.x.199 joined the chat 6 hours ago

BoSox Fan: @Zachary I can agree with that.

juliana: they actually "watch" what people try top pull up and if they try to pull up too much "inapproprite" stuff they get hauled into the office to discuss it and one dual credit student was blocked from using the computer at school so there went dual credit

Jeff: I have our filter split into students and staff - so that the teachers can get to items (like youtube) that I don't want the students to have access to

BarbInNebraska: Teachers have to be Good Digital Citizens first!

alsilverfang from x.x.x.199 joined the chat 6 hours ago

Jennifer M.: that's a good idea @Jeff

juliana: maybe I will talk to the tech people and ask them about that--they are right next door to me

Super Jill: Can the filtering software through the service center split our filtering into students and staff?

Corina: @BarbInNebraska yes that is so true

Zachary: Calf Fries anyone?

BarbInNebraska: @Corina just listened to a very good podcast this morning called Always On about this topic.

paula: Walta, Where'd you get the 1000 piece puzzle you mention you used w your GT kids last year?

John Peters: @BarbInNebraska AMEN, Teachers have to set the example for their student's learning, including computers and technology

BarbInNebraska: Check out the Always On podcast later! http://web.me.com/alwayson/AlwaysOn/Podcast/Podcast.html

Jennifer M.: Yeah! Using cell phones! :)

juliana: ok, zachary, tell me have you helped "create" them in the first place?

Jennifer M.: **gasp :)

klmontgomery: We nee to redefine a beginner when it comes to technology. Just saying, "I'm not techie," just doesn't work anymore.

alsilverfang: How do we make these tools available when the leaders of "blockers" fear the great unknown

paula: I wrote on my blog yesterday about a situation of one of my 8 year olds multi-tasking: tzstchr.edublogs.com

Pat: the web voting is disabled today

BarbInNebraska: @alsilverfang just keep talking about how to use the tools, they will cave!

klmontgomery: Web voting is disabled?

Zachary: Creat what

John Peters: Yes, you will have to use a cell phone to record your vote

Pat: i just tried to vote and got a red disabled box

Corina: Our principal allows us to use polleverywhere.com with our kids. The kids love it and they know they have to turn their phones back off when we are through

Pat: i don't text - it's not in my plan

John Peters: we will fix the web voting in just a minute

Jennifer M.: Wes just enabled Web voting

suzy: Corina, where do you teach?

Corina: I teach at AACAL

ncara from x.x.x.249 joined the chat 6 hours ago

BarbInNebraska: @John Thanks! I want to make my delicious site more user friendly

dkhill: Corina, I'm impressed that your principal allows this. The rules are being pushed so hard at the high schools on cell phone usage. GOOD FOR YOU!!!

John Peters: does anyone know how to find the most popular tags for science and astronomy?

Super Jill: @Jeff - thanks for the info!

dkhill: My question is how do you find the time to be on all of these social networks? I'm on flickr, facebook, delicious, scholar and subscribed to several podcasts. I feel like I'm glued to my computer.

klmontgomery: http://delicious.com/popular/XXX - Where XXX is the tag.

dennis: i can't find a TEKS for this

John Peters: @BarbInNebraska and @ dkhill I will try to ask Wes your qestions in just a moment

Linda: maybe it's on the "Test"

Susan: Has anyone noticed that he never slows down to let us figureout where he's at????? !!!

klmontgomery: http://delicious.com/tag/science astronomy

Jeff: @Super Jill - it depends on how your network logins are setup. The logins just have to be in 2 separate groups - 1 staff and 1 student. if they have any questions, I am at Miami ISD

klmontgomery: OOPS - http://delicious.com/tag/science astronomy

Susan from x.x.x.98 changed name to suzysouth 6 hours ago

klmontgomery: Should be science "plus" astronomy

BarbInNebraska: @dkhill good point, but what I learn on my social networks have been so valuable!

ncara: We unblocked delicious this year so that it would be available to our teachers and admins

BarbInNebraska: @dkhill when I have a wiki question, I post on Twitter and get a question answered PDQ

BarbInNebraska: @ncara I taught delicious to the teachers in our building, but I don't think they use it. ;-(

Heather Voran: @dkhill you use a site like Facebook or similar that aggregates all of them in one place

Don from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 6 hours ago

Jeff: is anybody using IE8 yet or windows 7?

Super Jill: @Jeff...I just put Windows 7 on my netbook...love it! But, then...Vista doesn't really bother me!

Jeff: @Super Jill - I have been using Vista on my laptop. I downloaded Windows 7 RC but I haven't installed it yet. I am going to install it this week to try it out

Zachary: IE 8 has an initial slow access if you are using Spybot. Spybot has more info on their homepage about it.

dkhill: Heather, thanks for the tip on Friendfeed.

Jennifer M.: Skype costs to make phone calls to landlines

Jennifer M.: if you both have a Skype account - it's free

Super Jill: ok...thanks for the info!

Jennifer M.: Skype also costs money for cell phones :)

Jennifer M.: sure!

dkhill: I think a lot of this is a staff development issue. We can show teachers all of this, but if we don't have proper training, frustration sets in.

Jennifer M.: totally agree @dkhill

Jennifer M.: it's all about the training and, again, giving purpose to the tools...and the process of using them personally prior to using them in classrooms

dkhill: as a trainer, sometimes it's the follow-up that becomes a time issue.

John Peters: The beauty of skype is utilizing the free video conferencing aspect. I use that all of the time to "visit" my my grandsons in San Antonio all of the time and it is free

Zachary: @dkhill If admin is not properly trained and or informed, that is frustrating

suzysouth: if we are putting our lessons and kids are recording their part, is it just 'out there' on the net?

Jennifer M.: To register: go to http://www.esc16.net; click on Workshops, Session # 128896

Jeff: is that last video on our videos list?

twilliamson15: Cowgirl, in my experience the only difference for the boards is with the software...the boards themselves do the same basic thing

suzysouth: Jeff, do we have a videos list?

Jennifer M.: @suzysouth it's not "out there" until the teacher puts it there...the content is wherever you placed it

klmontgomery: @twilliamson15 There are some slight differences in the way they operate, too.

zoe: mobi interwrite boards are also a great tool for the interactivity in the classroom.

chara: I did have a smartboard and they took it away for the whole school to use and no one have checked it out! Very sad :(

dkhill: I love Smartboards, but if you want the same experience away from the board, try the new Mobi by einstruction. The cost will make you smile!

suzyhug from x.x.x.199 joined the chat 2 hours ago

Jennifer M.: @annette & @Pat - we're working towards being able to offer SmartBoard training this summer...not out there yet...

klmontgomery: The nice thing about IWB ia that the lessons you can fin online import from one to the other. A SMART lesson can be imported into Promethian and vice versa.

hvoran: Presentation Zen--Gar Reynolds

Corina: @zoe do you use the mobi interwrite boards?

Cowgirl: has anyone worked with brands of whiteboards, which did you like better

twilliamson15: @klmontgomery can you mention any specifics?? I have a SmartBoard in my classroom but have used Promethian before and didn't notice any major differences?

klmontgomery: @Jennifer M. I'm a SMART certified trainer if you need one:-)

dkhill: We've had online staff development on Presentation Zen. I've already done training with some of our teachers and we're changing.

chara: I had an Interwrite Board and I liked it!

Jennifer M.: :) thanks @klmontgomery!

Corina: @dkhill I have one of the old interwrite boards, do the Mobi boards work better?

hvoran: @dkhill That is awesome! I'd love to see us have that kind of training here!

annette: Where do you do the training at?

Zachary: @Jennifer M I wish ESC XVI or XVII would offer a course on the creation of webpages using Google or FrontPage.

dkhill: Corina, not only better, but they'll work together!

twilliamson15: my wife has a Mimio system in her classroom...again, the basics are the same even with that tool...the real key is how you change your instruction to allow students to interact with the information

suzysouth: presentation zen has some great examples of different ways/methods of ppt presentations

dkhill: I'd be more than happy to do a training here.

suzysouth: best practice methods

Corina: @dkhill how about recording and uploading to Bb

Jeff: which type of the interwrite boards are better? mobi, rmeducation, etc

Jennifer M.: @Zachary - we haven't had requests for that in a while, but I know we've done that previously :)

klmontgomery: @twilliamson15 "The big difference is touching and writing on the boards. For the Smartboard there are 4 color "pens" that write on the board. You can add other colors, but those for are as easy to use as picking up off the tray. A finger can also be used to touch the board, acting like a cursor. For the Promethean board you can not use a finger to touch the board, instea you muct use one of the two provided pens. To change the color you have to use a menu on screen and then choose your color."

dkhill: Jeff, don't think it's a matter of better, but what you prefer.

Jeff: which do the teachers prefer? I would not be using it, but they would

Corina: @dkhill does AISD have a preference? we are looking at choosing for AACAL's math dept

twilliamson15: @klmontgomery okay, I'm with you there...didn't get that indepth into it...that's similar to my wife's Mimio, you have to use the pen and change the color through the software program

dkhill: kl, are you not using Notebook 10 with your smartboard?

Wesley: link is here: http://handouts.wesfryer.com/ingredients

Zachary: @Jennifer M, GeoCities is being closed by Yahoo so it may be a good time to guage interest again. I feel new teachers without a webpage would be very interested in Webpage design classes.

suzyhug from x.x.x.199 joined the chat 2 hours ago

dkhill: our cluster is going with the Mobi for both the ability to be away from the board and do whatever Smart can do and the cost.

klmontgomery: I am using and my certification is in Notebook 10, I have also presented Level 1 Senteo training.

Corina: thanks ;)

klmontgomery: A wiki makes a wonderful wbesite - no IT needed!

Jennifer M.: Thanks @Zachary - I was not aware and we're always looking for needs to meet...thanks for sharing!

zoe: if you are wishing to use interactive wireless boards that can be handed around to students, then it is only a matter of preferences. Interwrite was a stand alone company that is now part of the www.einstruction.com umbrella company.

dkhill: kl, I asked because you mentioned 10 has so many other uses of color.

suzysouth: I liked the ease of operating the smartboard, but we had to build our own lessons, find online resources, etc. it took a LOT of time

twilliamson15: @suzysouth one of my main goals for next year is to have students create interactive Notebook files for topics we're covering in class

zoe: The new smartboard updates have lots of lessons that are available at no charge. and the templates in smartboard are easy to use and put in the information that is relevant to your classroom lessons.

dkhill: suzysouth, the online lessons are what I LOVE about smart!

Jennifer M.: that is so true @klmontgomery - I know a lot of wikis are still blocked in school, but this would be a great way to show how wikis can be used in classrooms

klmontgomery: Flickr Group http://www.flickr.com/groups/voicethreadphotos/ has 800 photos all creative common licensed for teachers and students. Set up for use with VoiceThread, but can be used for anything by educators.

klmontgomery: @dkhill We were talking about the differences of IWBs.

klmontgomery: twilliamson15 Student use is so awesome!!!

twilliamson15: @klmontgomery our school's technician never got around to installing Notebook software in any of the labs...only on teacher computers...so I'm begging for it to be done over the summer :)

Jennifer M.: if you need assistance with the assignment (when we're released to work on that), I'll be available!

klmontgomery: My flickr resources http://thinkingmachine.pbworks.com/Think Photo Sharing with Flickr

klmontgomery: Bad Link - Try http://thinkingmachine.pbworks.com/Think Photo Sharing with Flickr

klmontgomery: Might have to type in URL??

Jennifer M.: To copy the picture

Jennifer M.: Find a fairly large size and right-click

klmontgomery: Chatzy does not like " " " " between Think Photo Sharing with Flickr

Jennifer M.: Don't forget to paste the url on the pic for proper attribution

klmontgomery: I mean Chatzy does not like "plus sign " "plus sign " between Think Photo Sharing with Flickr

Marisa: What did he click on to keep the picture clear when he pasted it and enlarged it

klmontgomery: Or look for Think Photo Sharing with Flickr link on http://thinkingmachine.pbworks.com/

klmontgomery: I use http://search.creativecommons.org/ Let's you look for CC licensed images, video and music.

Jennifer M.: you need to click on the "all sizes" button to find the different resolutions of pictures

Jennifer M.: Learned about a new tool "www.compfight.com"

Jeff: photostory

kim from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 70 minutes ago

suzysouth: where do we find that?

suzysouth: I found audacity, but do I want to download the beta version? what is beta

Jeff: beta is a new release version that they are testing

Jeff: you can download photostory for free off of microsoft's website

twilliamson15: Photostory link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=92755126-a008-49b3-b3f4-6f33852af9c1&DisplayLang=en

Jeff: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

suzysouth: thanks

Jeff: that is the main page for photostory

suzysouth: so would you recommend using a beta version or waiting till they work out the glitches?

Wesley: Lillie and John video: http://lc.celebrateoklahoma.us/video/688012:Video:669

klmontgomery: Go 4 Beta!

Jeff: i would download the stable version

Wesley: A Day to remember video: http://lc.celebrateoklahoma.us/video/a-day-to-remember

twilliamson15: suzy, Audacity 1.2.6 is the current stable release...but for the most part the beta versions work just as well

twilliamson15: and if something doesn't work, you can be part of the reporting process to help everyone else :)

Jeff: just to be safe. I download the beta but some people don't like the gliches. it would be up to you

suzysouth: I have wanted to know how to do this type of presentation with students for a long time, podcasts, etc. but never knew where to look, this is great

twilliamson15: another good recorder (low cost) is made by Nextar...can often be found at Staples for $10...records to WAV or WMV...

Carolyn from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 60 minutes ago

dkhill: the old version of Audacity works just fine. if you don't want to work with the issues that comes with beta, I'd stick with that.

Jeff: rmeducation also has a video recorder that is good and fairly cheap. The microphone is good also

klmontgomery: I am presenting a 3-hour pre-con (meet the cofounders of VT) on VoiceThread at NECC on June 28. Few seats still available http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/NECC2009/program/search_results_details.php?sessionid=43649714&selection_id=45631240&rownumber=7&max=11&gopage=

Jennifer M.: If you're wanting information on some of this and wanting to start using this in your classroom, I'm here to answer questions as well! :)

Jennifer M.: The key with some of this is don't be afraid to jump in and try!

suzysouth: Jennifer, I think you and I just emailed this week for me to sign up for the online Word courses

suzysouth: I will most likely be contacting you with questions if that is ok

Jennifer M.: awesome!

Jennifer M.: email is typcially best, though I don't mind speaking on the phone...just sometimes hard to get a hold of me that way

Jennifer M.: :) jennifer.mcdaniel@esc16.net

chara: Jennifer, Will we be working on some of this in the Web 2.0 Boot Camp?

Jennifer M.: we will be experiencing a lot of this...yes! :)

hvoran: In our statewide ESL/ELL initiative, we include a link to ESL/ELL voicethreads. There are about 29 voicethreads in that search. The best (IMHO) are the ones by user "David" that allow people from all over the world to practice speaking beginning and intermediate English Vocabulary and hear others practice as well: http://voicethread.com/#q ESL

hvoran: There should be a plus sign between the q and ESL that did not show up. http://voicethread.com/#q(plus sign)ESL
